Kyushu is home to many excellent ceramics, and Koishiwara Pottery is one of them.
Koishiwara Pottery has been produced in Higashimine Village, Fukuoka Prefecture, for 350 years,
There are currently about 50 pottery studios in the village.
Koishiwara-yaki declined for a time, but the folk art movement became more active around the time the Kyushu Folk Art Association was established in 1948, and Koishiwara-yaki came back into the limelight as folk art pottery.
In 1954, Muneyoshi Yanagi and Bernard Leach visited Koishiwara and praised Koishiwara-yaki as "the ultimate in utilitarian beauty," (用の美) and it quickly became famous nationwide.
While inheriting traditional techniques, Koishiwara continues to take on new challenges.
